# Meta Description & Title Tag Length Checker

Type a page title, meta description and URL to see live character counts, estimated pixel widths and a Google-style desktop and mobile preview that shows where the text may be cut.

## How long should a meta description and title tag be?

A title tag is the clickable headline of a search result, and a meta description is the short summary under it. Google publishes no fixed character limit for either. It shortens each one to fit the space on the results page, which is measured in pixels, and adds "..." where it cuts. As working rules of thumb used across the SEO industry:

| Element | Rule of thumb | Approximate pixel space |
|---|---|---|
| Title tag | About 50 to 60 characters | About 600 px at 20px Arial (desktop) |
| Meta description | About 120 to 155 characters | About 920 px desktop, about 680 px mobile, at 14px Arial |

This checker counts characters, estimates pixel width and labels each field: **too short** (title under 30 characters or description under 70), **good**, or **may be cut** (wider than the pixel space). A description between about 680 px and 920 px is flagged as fitting desktop but possibly cut on mobile.

## Why pixels matter more than characters

Google truncates by rendered width, so the same number of characters can fit or not depending on the letters. A capital "W" in Arial is about four times wider than a lowercase "i". Worked example at 20px Arial:

- "Wool Winter Wear WOW" (20 characters) measures roughly 220 px.
- "little lilies in July" (21 characters) measures roughly 140 px.

Both are short, but scale that difference up to a 60-character title and one fits while the other is cut. That is why this tool measures each string with your browser's canvas (`measureText`) in Arial at Google's sizes: 20px for desktop titles and 14px for descriptions. The result is an estimate. Your device's Arial (or a stand-in font when Arial is missing) can differ slightly from Google's, the exact limits change with Google's layout, and mobile titles wrap onto more lines. Aim to keep the important words well inside the limit rather than chasing the last pixel.

Google also rewrites titles and descriptions when it thinks other text on the page matches the search better. A clear, accurate title and description that match the page make that less likely, but no length guarantees Google will use your text.

## Writing tips for Shopify product and collection pages

- **Lead with what the page is.** Put the product or collection name and its main search phrase first, for example "Organic Cotton Crew Tee" before brand or adjectives, so the key words survive any cut.
- **Count your theme's suffix.** Many Shopify themes, Dawn among them, add " – Store name" to the end of the title tag unless the title already contains the store name. Leave room for it or the end of your title is what gets cut.
- **Give the description a reason to click.** Mention a concrete detail shoppers compare on: material, sizes, colors, shipping or returns. Only state offers that are true on the page.
- **Make every page unique.** Variants of the same template ("Buy X online at Store") on hundreds of products give Google little to show. Collection pages should describe the range ("40 linen dresses in 9 colors") rather than one product.
- **Skip keyword lists.** A readable sentence works better than a comma-separated list of search terms.

## Where to edit titles and meta descriptions in Shopify

1. **Products, collections, pages and blog posts:** open the item in your Shopify admin, scroll to the **Search engine listing** section at the bottom and click the edit (pencil) icon. Edit **Page title** and **Meta description**, then Save. Shopify's own counters there are character based, so check pixel width here.
2. **Home page:** go to **Online Store > Preferences** and edit the home page title and meta description.
3. **Empty fields:** if you leave them blank, Shopify falls back to the product or page name for the title and to the start of the description text, which is often cut mid-sentence.

After editing, Google picks up the change when it next crawls the page; that can take days. You can request a recrawl of an important page with the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the best meta description length?

As a rule of thumb, about 120 to 155 characters, which usually fits Google's desktop space of roughly 920 px. Google cuts by pixel width, not characters, so check the pixel estimate too, and keep the most important words near the start.

### How many characters should a title tag have?

Roughly 50 to 60 characters. Google shows about 600 px of a desktop title, so a title full of wide capitals can be cut sooner. Include any " – Store name" your theme adds when you count.

### Why does Google cut my title even though it is under 60 characters?

Because the limit is in pixels. Wide letters such as W and M and capitals take more space than i or l. Your theme may also add the store name to the end of the title tag, which makes the published title longer than what you typed.

### Are the pixel widths exact?

No. They are estimates measured in your browser with Arial at 20px for titles and 14px for descriptions. Fonts differ slightly between devices, and Google changes its layout over time, so treat the limits as approximations.

### Does Google always use my meta description?

No. Google often writes its own snippet from the page text when that matches a search better. A specific, accurate description that matches the page gives yours the best chance of being shown.

### Where do I change the meta description in Shopify?

Open the product, collection, page or blog post in your Shopify admin, scroll to Search engine listing and click the edit icon. The home page title and description are under Online Store > Preferences.
