Why Beauty Stores Lose Shoppers Between Product Page and Checkout
Beauty and skincare shoppers do a lot of reading before they buy. They check ingredients against their skin type, compare shades in photos, read reviews that mention undertones or texture, and look at how-to-use steps. Good product pages answer all of that, which is exactly what makes them long. A few patterns cause most of the drop-off:
- The buy button scrolls away. The Add to Cart button sits near the top of the page. By the time a shopper has read the ingredient list and the reviews, it is several screens above them, and the moment of "I want this" passes while they scroll back up.
- Variant decisions happen deep in the page. Shoppers often pick a shade or size after reading reviews or comparing swatches lower down, then have to find the variant picker again.
- Phone-first traffic. Many beauty brands get much of their traffic from influencer content and user-generated content viewed on phones, where every extra scroll and page load costs more.
- Routines mean several products. A shopper building a cleanser, serum and moisturizer routine wants to keep browsing after adding the first item. A redirect to the cart page interrupts that.
- Surprises at checkout. Shipping costs that appear only at checkout, or uncertainty about returns on opened skincare, are common reasons to leave.
A sticky add to cart bar addresses the first two. A slide cart drawer addresses the fourth and gives you space to answer the fifth. For the wider list of causes and fixes, see how to reduce cart abandonment on Shopify and why cart abandonment is high.
What to Set Up First
Start with the free features, check they work on your theme, and only then add Pro features if you have a specific reason for each one.
- The sticky add to cart bar on product pages, on desktop and phone.
- The slide cart drawer in place of your theme's cart, with items, totals, cart notes and a discount code field.
- Quick buy buttons on collection pages, for products that do not need a shade or size decision.
Plans. The free plan includes the slide cart drawer (with cart notes and a discount code field), the sticky add to cart bar on product pages, quick buy buttons and an announcement bar. Pro is $9.99 a month with a 7-day free trial, a flat price with no order-based tiers, and adds upsells in the cart, on product pages and on the thank-you page; a rewards bar with free shipping, discount and free gift tiers; add-ons such as shipping protection and fees; express checkout buttons, countdown timers and trust badges; payment, shipping and express checkout rules; and cart A/B tests and the AI assistant. You can install it from EA Sticky Cart Drawer & Upsell on the Shopify App Store.
Step-by-Step Setup
- Install and enable the app embed. Install the app, then turn on its app embed in the theme editor. It does not edit your theme code, and you can turn it off at any time from the same place.
- Build the cart drawer from cards. The drawer editor shows each section as a card with a live preview of the drawer: items, totals, notes, discount code, trust badges and express checkout buttons. Put the items and the total first, and make sure the checkout button is visible on a phone without scrolling inside the drawer.
- Turn on the sticky add to cart bar. It appears once shoppers scroll past your theme's Add to Cart button, so it never duplicates a button that is already on screen. Check it on a product with several shades or sizes and confirm the bar shows the variant the shopper selected.
- Set up quick buy. Quick buy adds to cart from collection pages without opening the product. It suits single-variant products such as a lip balm or a travel-size cleanser. For products where a shopper should compare shades first, tag them (for example
shade-match) and use the option to hide quick buy for tagged products. - Choose trust badges that are true for your store (Pro). Secure checkout, your returns policy and certifications you actually hold. Shoppers read beauty claims carefully, so do not add a badge you cannot back up.
- Turn on express checkout buttons in the drawer (Pro). Returning customers reordering a favorite product often want the shortest path to payment.
- Test the whole flow on a real phone before you leave it running: add from the sticky bar, add from quick buy, open the drawer, change a quantity, apply a discount code and reach checkout. Our sticky add to cart best practices guide has a fuller checklist.
Settings That Suit a Beauty Store
- Sticky bar on phone and desktop. Long pages are a problem on both, but the phone is where it matters most. Keep both on unless your theme already has its own sticky bar, in which case keep only one.
- Drawer content kept short. Every card you add pushes the checkout button further down. Start with items, total, express checkout and trust badges, then add more only with a reason.
- Order notes. Useful if you offer gift messages or engraving on packaging; otherwise leave the notes card off.
- Discount code field. Some stores find a visible code field sends shoppers off to search for codes; others get questions when it is missing. Pick one and test it (see below).
- Quick buy hidden for shade products. Using the tag option keeps wrong-shade orders, and the returns that follow, down.
- Optional fee for gift wrapping (Pro). If you gift-wrap, an optional fee in the cart lets shoppers choose it without contacting you.

Optional Pro Features for Beauty Carts
These are worth adding once the free setup is working, one at a time so you can tell what each one does.
- Rewards bar with a free gift tier. The rewards bar can show tiers for free shipping, a discount and a free gift, with a gift picker and a rewards list in the drawer. A choice of sample sizes is a natural gift for a beauty store, because it introduces products the shopper has not tried. As a neutral starting point, set the free shipping goal a little above your current average order value and the gift tier above that. The app creates the discount so it applies at checkout. See how to set a free shipping threshold for more on choosing the goal.
- Upsells with rules. Show the next step in a routine based on what is in the cart, for example a toner when a cleanser is added, or a sunscreen alongside a vitamin C serum. Upsells can appear in the drawer, on product pages and on the thank-you page.
- Shipping protection. Offer it as an add-on in the cart, especially for higher-value orders or fragile glass packaging.
- Payment and shipping rules. Hide, rename or reorder payment and shipping methods at checkout, and hide express buttons by rule, for example to give a shipping method a clearer name.
What to Test
On Pro, cart A/B tests let you run two cart setups side by side and keep the winner. On the free plan, compare like-for-like periods before and after a change. Either way, change one thing at a time. Ideas that suit beauty stores:
- Drawer with a routine upsell card versus without it.
- Free shipping only versus free shipping plus a sample gift tier.
- Discount code field shown versus hidden.
- Express checkout buttons above versus below the main checkout button.
- Quick buy on all simple products versus best-sellers only.
Run each test across full weeks so weekday and weekend shoppers are both included, and avoid starting one during a product launch, a sale or a big influencer post, which change who is visiting. Wait for enough orders on both sides before you decide. Our mobile A/B test ideas has more test ideas.
What to Measure
Use Shopify analytics for store-wide numbers and split them by device, since the sticky bar matters most on phones:
- Add-to-cart rate on product pages: the share of product page sessions that add something.
- Reached checkout: the share of sessions with a cart that go on to checkout. This is the step the drawer is meant to help.
- Conversion rate by device, phone and desktop separately.
- Average order value, especially after adding upsells or a rewards bar.
- Returns and exchanges for shade products, to check that quick buy and the sticky bar are not leading to more wrong-shade orders.
On Pro, the app's insights show which features earn the most, and A/B test results show how the two cart setups compare. Our cart abandonment statistics page gives general context, but the comparison that matters is your store against itself.
Common Mistakes
- Two sticky bars. If your theme already has one, turn one off.
- Covering other buttons. Check the bar against your chat button, cookie banner and any announcement bar on a phone.
- Quick buy on shade-dependent products. Hide it with a tag so shoppers compare shades first.
- An overloaded drawer. Too many cards push checkout out of sight, the opposite of what the drawer is for.
- A gift tier nobody reaches. If the gift goal is far above what shoppers usually spend, it becomes noise. Start close to your current order values and adjust.
- Trust badges you cannot back up. Only show certifications and policies you actually have.
- Judging too early. A few days, or a week that includes a launch, will not tell you much. See Shopify conversion optimization for how to read results.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a sticky add to cart bar?
It is a bar that stays on screen while a shopper scrolls a product page, with the product, variant and an Add to Cart button. EA Sticky Cart Drawer & Upsell shows it once the theme's own button scrolls out of view, on desktop and phone, so a shopper who decides to buy halfway down a long beauty product page does not have to scroll back up.
What is a slide cart drawer?
A slide cart drawer is a cart that slides in from the side of the page when a shopper adds a product, so they can review the cart and check out without leaving the page they are on. For a beauty store that means a shopper can add a cleanser, keep browsing for a serum and check out from the drawer when the routine is complete.
Will a cart drawer and sticky bar reduce my cart abandonment?
They remove specific steps that cause drop-off: scrolling back up to find the Add to Cart button, and loading a separate cart page before checkout. Whether that lowers abandonment on your store depends on why your shoppers leave, which is why this playbook ends with what to test and what to measure. Compare like-for-like periods, or use a cart A/B test on the Pro plan, rather than assuming a result.
Is EA Sticky Cart Drawer & Upsell free?
Yes. The free plan includes the slide cart drawer with cart notes and a discount code field, the sticky add to cart bar on product pages, quick buy buttons and an announcement bar. Pro costs $9.99 a month with a 7-day free trial and adds upsells, the rewards bar, add-ons, fees, express checkout buttons, trust badges, timers, checkout rules and A/B tests.
Can I offer free samples or a free gift in the cart?
Yes, on Pro. The rewards bar has tiers for free shipping, a discount and a free gift, with a gift picker in the drawer, and the app creates the discount so it applies at checkout. Beauty stores often use the gift tier for a choice of sample sizes.
Will it work with my theme?
It installs as an app embed without editing your theme code and replaces the theme's cart with the drawer. You can turn it off at any time in the theme editor. If your theme has its own sticky add to cart bar, turn one of them off so shoppers do not see two.
