Why fashion stores need a better sign-up offer

Fashion is a browsing category. Shoppers arrive from Instagram, TikTok or a creator's link, scroll a few products on their phone, compare you with other stores and leave. Few buy on the first visit, and most of them never come back on their own. A list of email and SMS subscribers is what lets you reach those people again when you launch a new collection, restock a sell-out or start a seasonal sale, without paying for the same visitor twice. Our email marketing guide covers what to send once they are on the list.

The problem is that almost every clothing store already shows the same box: "Get 10% off your first order". Shoppers have seen it many times and close it without reading. A spin wheel changes the format rather than the size of the offer. The shopper plays, wins a prize and gets a code, which feels more like part of the shopping experience than a form to fill in.

A game is not automatically better, though. Prizes that are too generous attract people who only want the code, and a popup that covers the product a shopper just tapped on is simply annoying. The rest of this playbook is about getting those details right for a fashion store.

What to set up first

  1. Decide what you are collecting. Email only, SMS only, or both. If you send texts for drops and restocks, collect phone numbers too; if you do not have an SMS plan yet, start with email.
  2. Set a prize budget. Decide the largest discount you can give on your lowest-margin products, and keep every prize below it. Free shipping is often a good prize for clothing because it is easy to understand.
  3. Check how discounts combine. In Shopify, decide whether a popup code may combine with other discounts, so a shopper who already has a creator or sale code does not stack two.
  4. Prepare the welcome email or flow. Every sign-up gets a unique discount code by email from the app. In your email tool, plan what comes next: your brand story, best-sellers, how sizing works, and the next drop.
  5. Gather brand assets. Logo, brand colours, fonts and a couple of lines in your brand's tone of voice.
  6. Check your traffic against the pricing. The app is free up to 1,000 store pageviews a month with every feature. Above that it is usage-based: $4.99 a month up to 2,000 pageviews, $14.99 up to 5,000 and $29.99 up to 10,000, with higher tiers shown in the app and a 7-day free trial on paid tiers. Your tier follows your pageviews, so the popup is never switched off for traffic.

Then install EA Email Popup & Spin Wheel from the Shopify App Store. It loads as a Shopify app embed and does not edit your theme code.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Start from a template or Create with AI. There are 98 templates, or the AI can build a popup in your store's colours, fonts and tone. Either way, you can edit every screen afterwards.
  2. Choose the game. Spin the wheel is the classic choice. Scratch card, mystery box, Plinko and slots are also available, and a plain email or SMS popup is always an option.
  3. Set the prizes and odds. Each game has its own prizes and odds. Add a limit to any prize you want to cap, such as the largest discount.
  4. Add a question step (optional). Ask one or more questions before the form, for example "What are you shopping for today?" with answers such as dresses, denim or accessories, and give a different offer for each answer if you want to.
  5. Set the form. Email, phone number, or both. Shoppers can also sign up in one tap with Shop.
  6. Choose how it appears. Show it as a popup with a teaser button, as an inline signup form inside your theme, or as its own signup page. Pick a trigger such as exit intent.
  7. Connect your tools. Sign-ups are saved as Shopify customers and can sync, with their answers, to Klaviyo, Omnisend, Mailchimp, Attentive or Brevo, or to any tool through a webhook.
  8. Preview on a phone and on desktop. Check that the wheel, the form and the close button all fit on a small screen.
  9. Go live and test it yourself. Sign up with your own email, check the code arrives, and place a test order with it.

Settings that suit fashion stores

Prizes

Keep the prize list short and believable. A neutral starting set for a clothing store might be a small percentage off, a slightly larger percentage off, free shipping, and one rarer, bigger prize with a limit. Percentages usually suit fashion better than fixed amounts because basket sizes vary so much between a T-shirt and a coat. Give every slice a real chance of being won; do not show a prize that can never come up.

Offers by answer, cart value or traffic source

Offers can depend on a shopper's answer, the cart value or the traffic source, and each prize can have its own limit. For fashion this is useful in two ways: a shopper with a large cart can see a free shipping prize instead of a percentage, and a shopper arriving from a creator campaign that already carries a code can see a different offer so discounts do not stack.

Questions that segment your list

A question such as category, style or the occasion they are shopping for gives every subscriber a label. Because answers sync to your email tool, you can send dress launches to the people who said dresses. Keep it to one or two questions so the popup stays quick.

Placement and timing

Design and copy

Fashion shoppers notice when a popup looks out of place. Use your own colours and fonts, write the headline in your brand's voice, and say clearly what the shopper gets and how to use it. For more prize and copy ideas, see our spin wheel popup guide.

What to test

The app can A/B test two versions of a popup and keep the one that signs up more shoppers. Change one thing per test and let it run until both versions have had a fair amount of traffic.

Judge each test by sign-ups first, then check that the winner's subscribers also place orders. A version that signs up more people who never buy is not a real win.

What to measure

Together, these tell you whether the popup is building a list that pays for its discounts, which matters more for customer acquisition than the raw subscriber count.

Common mistakes

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to see results from a spin wheel popup?

It depends on your traffic. A busy store collects enough views to judge a popup within days; a smaller store may need several weeks. Wait until the popup has had a fair number of views before changing it, and change one thing at a time so you know what made the difference.

What spin wheel prizes work best for fashion stores?

Short, believable prize lists usually work best: a small percentage off, a larger percentage off, free shipping, and one rarer, bigger prize with a limit. Percentages tend to suit clothing better than fixed amounts because basket sizes vary widely. Keep every prize within the margin you set before you started.

Does a spin wheel popup hurt the shopping experience?

It can if it covers the product a shopper just tapped on. Use a teaser button on phones, an exit-intent trigger, and your own brand colours and fonts, and the game feels like part of the store rather than an interruption.

What sign-up rate should I expect from a spin wheel?

There is no honest universal number; it depends on your traffic, prizes, design and timing. Measure your current popup first, then compare the spin wheel against it with an A/B test. EA Email Popup & Spin Wheel shows views and sign-ups for every popup, so you can work out your own sign-up rate.

How do you avoid low-quality, discount-only subscribers?

Keep prizes modest, cap the biggest one, add a question so you know what each subscriber wants, and follow the code email with brand and product content rather than more discounts. Then track orders and revenue per popup, not only sign-ups.

Can I use a spin wheel popup with Klaviyo or Mailchimp?

Yes. EA Email Popup & Spin Wheel saves sign-ups as Shopify customers and can sync contacts and answers to Klaviyo, Omnisend, Mailchimp, Attentive and Brevo, or to any tool through a webhook.

Is EA Email Popup & Spin Wheel free?

It is free up to 1,000 store pageviews a month with every feature. Above that, pricing is usage-based: $4.99 a month up to 2,000 pageviews, $14.99 up to 5,000 and $29.99 up to 10,000, with higher tiers in the app. Paid tiers start with a 7-day free trial.
